Packaging Compliance – New EU Regulation

Don’t waste packaging – Ready for the extended producer responsibility for packaging?

The EU has recently adopted a new regulation on packaging and packaging waste. This is just the latest EU action that sets a clear route for packaging coming from EU companies:

1.      Packaging waste in the EU must be reduced substantially.
2.      Packaging must be recyclable.
3.      Packaging waste must be less harmful to the environment.

For example, in Denmark alone, it is estimated that 41,000 companies will be affected by the extended producer responsibility for packaging that will enter into force in July 2025. By then, companies that sell packaged goods will be legally, financially, and practically responsible for the entire life cycle of their packaging. But already this year, companies must register (at “Dansk Producentansvar” for Danish companies) and report on the expected amount and types of packaging that they will put on the market in 2024. The responsibility also affects importers, distributors and e-commerce companies.

In 2024, your company must prepare for the extended producer responsibility by understanding how you are affected, how you can join a collective solution and how to collect the required data on your packaging.

The new regulation on packaging will be a driver for innovation and it can be a significant competitive advantage for the companies that can develop clever, sustainable packaging. Your efforts to make your packaging sustainable also has consequences for the rest of your ESG work; for example regarding CO2 emissions, circularity and waste generation.
